Madison Harding Agreement Update
November 14, 2024
The Madison Board of Education (“Madison”) is pleased to announce that it voted on Thursday, November 14th, to approve a new sending/receiving agreement with the Harding Board of Education (“Harding”) following Harding’s unanimous affirmative vote at their Tuesday, November 12th meeting.
Although the current agreement does not expire until the 2025-26 school year, when Harding expressed an interest to open discussions early so they could explore all options, Madison graciously agreed. In the end, Madison and Harding came together and decided it was in the best interest of both districts to establish a new contract. This agreement continues the previously negotiated tuition rate under revised terms that we believe will facilitate a strong partnership and provide financial stability for our District as well as continuity of educational excellence for all students. The new agreement will be for a term of 7 years retroactive to the start of the current academic year, July 1, 2024, and ending on June 30, 2031.
This decision is the culmination of the hard work and careful analysis by Madison to center its deliberations on the overall educational experience and wellbeing of all students while also ensuring its fiduciary duty to Madison’s taxpayers. Annually enrolling a meaningful number of Harding students does not add a significant financial burden as it does not require additional teachers, programming, nor facilities. Moreover, the benefits and costs of the referendum were considered but will not fully materialize until the latter part of this new contract. It is with these current realities that the parties were able to negotiate a discounted tuition rate. A reliable stream of tuition revenue is highly beneficial to Madison, especially with unpredictable state aid and a budgetary cap, and will allow us to continue to offer excellent academic programs to all students.
More importantly, this decision is not about the bottom line. This new agreement is a reflection of Madison values and honors history, tradition, and community. Continuing decades of partnership has always been at the core of Madison’s discussions, but it is only with the strong support of the communities that Madison can continue its long history of welcoming Harding students as its own.
We are delighted that Harding students will continue to benefit from the top-quality education provided by Madison Public Schools and from the investment the Madison community made during last year’s referendum, which further reflects how much Madison values the education and wellbeing of all students. We look forward to graduating another generation of Dodgers.
